Heath Sadlier — I think much of the issue with the spread of extreme views on social media is caused by the Recommendation Engine design whether on YouTube (“What to watch next”) or Facebook (“News feed”).

If you haven’t already seen it, I think this post by Mark Zuckerberg is worth reading — in particular the section titled — “Discouraging Borderline Content”.

I think he proposes a very valid algorithm tweak that could have a very positive impact.

Any social network existing or new will have to tackle this design issue in order to solve the problem.

My main issue though that we need to solve is really that of governance — the idea that vital public discourse is being regulated privately seems completely wrong and a recipe for systemic political failure.
